Michael Wagner never wanted to play ukulele, receiving his first ukulele as an unwanted gift in 2003. However, Wagner quickly discovered that locked inside this unassuming instrument was an arsenal of sound previously unknown to the world. In his hands, the ukulele becomes a hybrid ukulele-tabla-drum machine, capable of simultaneously creating distinct rhythmic and melodic tones, and silencing dumbstruck audiences in seconds.

On guitar Wagner channels a much angrier version of Django Reinhardt. Writing songs of "joyful discontent", Wagner draws inspiration from mindless employment, the joys and pitfalls of dating strippers, and his love-hate relationship with the City of New Orleans, his former home.

The energy of Wagner's performances draws listeners in, reminding them that while life may be miserable, it's no excuse not to have fun.
